UTC Seminar Series

Date: Thursday April 11, 2024

Time: 12 pm to 1 pm

Platform: Zoom

Registration: Open to all interested parties

Overview:

The third UTC Seminar Series presentation of the Spring 2024 semester will continue the theme of paratransit with a conversation that centers on rideshare services and patrons who rely on wheelchairs.

Dr. Mahtot Gebresselassie will present her work that investigated wheelchair accessibility of Uber- and Lyft-hailed transportation from the perspective of wheelchair users.  Her work examined their perceptions, experiences, and preferences. A survey of 341 wheelchair users in the U.S. was conducted to understand general trends and patterns. Data collected from 224 complete and 117 partial responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and linear and logistic regressions.

The findings indicated that some wheelchair users were satisfied with the service, but others experienced challenges, including service denial by drivers and lack of accessible vehicles. Almost half of those without Uber or Lyft experience perceived Uber and Lyft as a viable means of transportation. The study also showed that the propensity to be an Uber or Lyft user is associated with type of wheelchair, having access to a vehicle, and level of education.

The event will be held on zoom and all interested parties are invited to participate.

The event will be held April 11, from noon to 1 pm and will be presented on zoom.
